"Far back, far back in our dark soul the horse prances." - DH Lawrence

"Mancha" Master Copy
This little painting is a master copy of "Mancha" by Diana R. Lodge.
I have only been able to find this painting in a little book I have called "Horses, An Illustrated Treasury."
It seems the Original is in a private collection and there are no images of it online.
The little book I have is beautiful, I've had it since I was a child, and I always loved this painting.
Copying it was a wonderful learning experience. Mine is a bit moodier and darker, but I like it.

Captain Dancing
This is my first ever oil painting! I did this under the guidance of my best friend, who had been taught oil painting in their fancy art high school.
I was 18 years old.
I look at it now and see the issues it has, but I'm still proud of it, all these years later.
The horse is Captain, my second horse. I might like to paint this photo again, sometime, for comparison.
That could be fun!
Oil on canvas panel, 7x9

Goodnight Fireheart
This little watercolor painting, done a whim in a sketchbook, became the jumping off point for my screen name and my studio name.
Fireheart was my personal nickname for my late horse, Tanzen, my heart horse.
You will see chestnut horses often in my work - I have owned two, and I have a special soft spot for red horses.
Tanzen in particular was a fiery Arabian with a big personality and he will always be a subject I return to.
This painting was one of the first of many, done in memorium of him, after his death in 2018.
Goodnight, Fireheart

Tanzen
A memorial portrait done of my late horse Tanzen.
Watercolor on hotpress paper.

05
Breaking Gold
I've spent a great deal of time around horses, enough to know they are awkward, silly, accident prone goof-balls. Despite this, they still remain to me one of the most visually stunning, majestic, powerful creatures in the world. When I think of horses I get lost in magical surreal visions of them. I tried to capture some of that in this painting while also experimenting with light, color and texture.
Gouache on Watercolor paper. 11x14.

Tanzen THE FINAL s WM.jpg
A portrait of my late horse, Tanzen, in oils.
I tried to capture the glow of his chestnut coat in the light, while experimenting with thicker, impasto paint textures.

- A mostly white horse, with a tawny bucksin face and spot on her side, stands in tall yellow grass that blows in the wind. Her dark tail and forelock, and some white mane, also blow in the wind, under a cloudy sky. She is looking at the viewer.
- A chestnut horse trotting in a green field on a cloudy day.
- A leaping red horse with a blaze, on a dark blue, starry background. The horse has an anatomically correct heart visible in the rib area, surrounded by fire.
- A pale grey horse stands on before a bright red background, prancing majestically. Beneath it and rising up around it is what appears to be liquid gold.
